2010 - Meet Me In St Louis
![]() by arrangement with Musicscope and Stage Musicals Ltd of New York |
Those of us who have a soft spot for the wonderful old MGM Hollywood musicals usually place the 1944 film “Meet Me In St Louis” very near the top of the list. One of the main reasons for this is undoubtedly the superb performance of the multi-talented Judy Garland who manages in this film to surpass even her own high standards. Her singing of “The Boy Next Door” and the exuberant “Trolley Song” set the seal on her career in musical film. Despite the tremendous success of the film it took another 45 years for the film to be re-written as a stage show and when this show finally opened at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway in 1989 it was a smash hit. Twelve new songs were written for the stage show and many of these can be heard in the version we are presenting in March 2010. Meet Me in St Louis is a rare treasure in the musical theatre. Join the Smith family at the 1904 World’s Fair, and see how their love and respect for each other is tempered with the genuine humour that can only be generated by such a special family. Memorable musical numbers include The Boy Next Door, A Raving Beauty, The Trolley Song, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Whenever I’M with You and A Day in New York. Suddenly there is a blackout. Imagine yourself standing with the family as the lights from the World’s Fair fill the stage; you’ve never seen such a spectacular panorama in your life. |
